Tom Sandberg: Vibrant World
HENIE ONSTAD KUNSTSENTER, Oslo
31.10.2025–01.03.2026

Tom Sandberg: Vibrant World was the first comprehensive retrospective of Tom Sandberg (1953–2014), bringing together more than one hundred photographic works spanning four decades of his artistic practice. Organized largely chronologically, it traced the development of Sandberg’s work from the late 1970s and 1980s, through the 1990s, and into the final decade of his life.

The exhibition traced the development of Sandberg's distinct photographic vision from his student years in England as well as photographs produced only days before his passing in 2014. Together, these works offered an extensive overview of the motifs, formal concerns, and technical approaches that shaped his practice over time.

In addition to Sandberg's artworks, the exhibition also presented a selection of archival materials drawn from the archives of Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, where Sandberg was closely connected in a formative period of his early career and worked as a commissioned photographer in the 1980s. These materials offered further insight into his role within the artistic milieu that the art centre fostered

A newly produced filmic portrait of the artist by director Gerry Meaudre, a friend of Sandberg's since their student days at Trent Polytechnics in Nottingham,  was commissioned for the exhibition.

The accompanying catalogue presents reproductions of all works included in the exhibition alongside a complete list of works. It features newly commissioned texts by Susanne Østby Sæther, Morten Andenæs, Vibeke Tandberg, and Torgrim Eggen, offering different perspectives on Sandberg’s life and work.
